Robert Mugabe, president of Zimbabwe, is one of the longest-serving dictators in the world. However, elections held in March 2008 directly challenged his rule. The question for this market is whether as of noon on June 1, 2008 (in Harare, Zimbabwe, same as 10 a.m. UTC, 3 a.m. PDT) Mugabe will still be acting as president of Zimbabwe. By this I mean that he will claim that he is still legally the president and that he will continue to occupy Zimbabwe’s presidential facilities. In other words, if he still claims to be president but is in exile or prison, to provide two examples, he would not be considered to be acting as president. Also, as long he is claiming to be president and acting like he is, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of this market whether his re-election has been recognized either internationally or domestically.
This market may be liquidated early if Mugabe leaves the presidency, is jailed or involutarily leaves Zimbabwe before the market’s scheduled closing.
