For all you linebacker fans, the answer in 2006 was wide receivers 33, linebackers 31.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_NFL_Draft
Cornerbacks and safeties were lumped together in some of the years before 2006 which somewhat confuses things. However, it appears that linebackers would have won in 2005 but wide receivers won from 2000 to 2004. (See table at bottom of linked page to click on any year back to 1936.)
wstritt: However, in 2006, “Other” totalled 36. Guards 20; Centers 9; Fullbacks 3; Kickers 2; Punters 2. Other would have won in that year.
Jon – Nice catch. Didn’t do that math. Tough decision…wide receiver? linebacker? other???
wait, is other equal to centers PLUS guards PLUS etc, or centers OR guards OR etc… ?
Another problem that I’ve found is that different websites are categorizing players into different positions: for example, some sites are listing players as tailbacks, fullbacks, and running backs as all being “running backs” while others have them separated out as one of the three. As well, some players are designated as “defensive” or “offensive” line as they rotate through specific positions on their team’s line. I have also noted that they are not categorized consistently from one to the other. Which site will be used to decide on their specific position?
The count per ESPN is:
Wide Receiver – 35,
Cornerback – 30,
Linebacker – 29 (ILB + OLB),
Other – 26 (FB + OG + C + PK + Pu + LS),
Running Back – 23 (excluding the 4 fullbacks)

Per Wikipedia
Wide receiver – 35,
Linebacker – 30,
Cornerback – 30,
Offensive tackle – 27,
Other – 22 (FB + OG + C + PK + Pu)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_nfl_draft#By_position
Count per NFL.com
Wide Receiver – 34, Cornerback – 32, Linebacker – 31, Running back – 27, Other 19 (“specialists” plus offensive linemen other than tackles)

So, per ESPN, Wikipedia and NFL.com counts, wide receivers seems to be the winner.
Thanks wstritt… I also have been unable to find a site where “wide receiver” does not have the most selections. In this case, it does not seem to matter which website is being used as to the overall outcome of the market.
Out of the 250+ players selected in the 2008 NFL draft, which position will be the most picked?
Details:
1) The college position of the player is counted (eg, a college LB may be converted into a NFL safety but will be counted as a LB for this market).
2) The total is over all 7 draft rounds; non-drafted free-agents don’t count.
To see the 2007 position totals look at:

Center, punter, placekicker, OG, FB, etc.
