wait… if it happens today, do all shares pay out? or just “by april”?
I’m not convinced Psystar even exists. But if it does, I can’t imagine Apple sitting still for long.
yes, also: what is the payout if it’s fake or shuts itself down?
If there is nothing to shut down, maybe they all pay out at zero? Technically Apple will not force them to do anything by any date? Hmmm.
I’m not sure what to do here. I’m new to inkling markets and I thought that this would be an interesting question. When I created the market, I did not think Psystar would be a scam – but it’s certainly looking that way now.
Any ideas?
I don’t think there’s an Inkling-specific answer. Just pick a policy that you think is reasonable and specify it clearly.
You’re not alone, poorly worded questions that miss potential answers are the bane of Inkling. Usually when it gets too borked the thing to do is refund all the stocks.
I agree with Zakkaria. While there is a technical argument to close everthing out at 0 (noted above), the technical argument is not in the spirit of what was intended (i.e. there was really something for Apple to do something about).
Further, assuming there are a mixture of longs and shorts in the market, anything other than a refund will screw someone.
The clean answer – refund the market.
Yes, it is an interesting question, so don’t let this experience keep you from trying your hand at starting another market. I didn’t know about Psystar under I came across this market, and reading about it has been fascinating.
I’d agree that the best thing to do under the circumstances is to refund the market.
I appreciate the feedback – I’m going to cite this news story by CNET…

It appears that the Psystar store is back online today and they are stating that orders will ship. My original market still stands – will Apple shut them down. I see at least ten news stories out there claiming that they will…
It wasn’t April 2008 as they appear to still be going.

April cashed out…
May has been and gone and Psystar are still alive and well – http://www.psystar.com/press.html
Finally, Apple has sued. But as of now, the computers are for sale on the company’s site.
So, will this market be closed on August 1st since that’s the last remaining option?
While it’s doubtful a small vendor like Psystar could withstand a legal assault by Apple on its own, the company could possibly draw support from interest groups that are opposed to restrictive software licenses and patents, or even from big hardware makers that, no doubt, would themselves relish the opportunity to market a Mac clone — if only to counter Microsoft’s influence on their business.
