I assume this market refers to Super Bowl XLIV, which occurs in 2010 (but after the 2009 NFL season).

I think there are a lot of Boston sports fans on this site. I noticed early on in the MLB markets that the Red Sox had a big lead, long before there was any reason to bet on anyone. Now they’re what, 7 games behind the Yankees? Of course, they still could pull off the wild card slot, but they’re only a couple of games ahead of the Rangers for that honor. And this is coming from a Red Sox fan. (Do I need to add “long-suffering” or is that redundant? ;)

You have closed out a lot of teams. I’m not saying that’s wrong, but I am curious as to how you know they have been eliminated.
If, for example, the 49ers lose tonight (and they’re not favored), then there would be only two teams in the NFC with better records than Seattle fighting it out for the wild card slots. With Atlanta at 6 and 7, and Seattle at 5 and 8, with 3 games to go, why couldn’t Seattle take one of the wild card slots, and, in theory, go on to win the Super Bowl?
Granted, that’s a HIGHLY unlikely scenario, but it seems to me that until the teams are mathematically eliminated, they should stay in this market.
Admittedly, my reading is very quick and dirty, and I did not look at their schedules, etc., so I may be all wet. I’d just like to know what your source or logic is for eliminating the teams you have. Thanks!

I have to agree. Yes, all history pretty much says teams like Seattle or Buffalo can’t win the Super Bowl. But as of right now (before the 49ers-Cardinals game), they are mathematically not eliminated from the the playoff. The list above almost seems arbitrary because Buffalo, Carolina and Seattle can still all make the playoffs. Whereas Oakland and Kansas City have been eliminated and cannot mathematically win the Super Bowl. This link makes the breakdown clear: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/standings/playoffrace

Somebody emailed me and suggested (and gave good reason) to close out a lot of those teams, so I did it without investigating as much as I should have. I had been searching desperately for a link like you have provided to find out what teams have been mathematically eliminated. From here on out, I’ll cash out only once I see a team being eliminated on that list. Thanks for the comments.

Each team will be cashed out as soon as they are mathmatically eliminated. I realize I should cash out the Detroit Lions immediately after this market is published, but I’ll at least give them the preaseason.

Market is straightforward – whoever wins the 2009 NFL Championship wins the market. Market will stay open up until 2009 Superbowl kickoff.
