Phelps led off the Gold Medal winning 4 X 100M free relay. Has 3 others to thank for this one, particularly anchor leg swimmer Jason Lezak who swam the fastest split in history on the way to establishing a new world record. Two Gold medals now in the bag.

The men’s 400M medley relay team sets a new world record and wins 8th Gold Medal for Michael Phelps.
Michael Phelps once again has the opportunity to break Mark Spitz’s 1972 record of 7 gold medals at one Olympic Games having qualified for 5 individual events (100M Butterfly, 200M Freestyle, 200M Butterfly, 200M IM, and 400 IM) and will almost certainly swim the 3 relays (4×100M Freestyle, 4×200M Freestyle, and 4×100M Medley).
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Phelps had the same opportunity swimming the same 8 races. Though he ended up with 8 medals, only 6 were gold, winning the 100M and 200M Butterfly, 200M and 400M IM, 4×200M Free Relay and swimming in the prelims for the 4×100M Medley Relay team that won gold. The 4×100M Free Relay and 200M Free ended up with bronze medals.
