## Background information

Several theories have been proposed which contain more than 4 spacetime dimensions, but they are hidden from us and may only be discovered at high energy colliders such as the LHC. Most string theories contain extra spacetime dimensions, as well as two classes of effective theories known as large (ADD) and warped (Randall-Sundrum) extra dimensions. These scenarios may be discovered by finding at the LHC: Kaluza-Klien states (normal particles with some momentum in the extra dimension that looks like mass from our 4-dimensional perspective); black holes with masses below the 4-dimensional Planck scale that quickly evaporate; massive gravitons. If any of the above are discovered at the LHC with at least 5 sigma significance, and their extra-dimensional origin proved (as opposed to an effective theory containing the same states but

*no*extra dimensions), this market will close with an affirmative answer. Note that this does not refer to extra fermionic dimensions (as Supersymmetry is sometimes called). However this market will be closed with an affirmative answer if both Supersymmetry and extra spacetime dimensions are discovered. Note also that this market refers specifically to

*LHC*discoveries, and the discovery of e.g. deviations from the 1/r^2 force law of gravity do not count. Non-LHC discoveries may be used in conjunction with LHC discoveries to prove that the phenomena seen at the LHC is of extra-dimensional origin, but something must be seen at the LHC for this market to answer in the affirmative. Finally, note that interpreting strong dynamics (e.g. technicolor discovery) via the AdS/CFT correspondence does not count as discovery of an extra dimension.
