I'm thinking of starting a blog where each day has a recommended short thing to do that I think has the potential of making that person happier.
This thinking is inspired by the folks at CrossFit.
They have a new workout posted each day. Their goal is to avoid repetition and provide ”a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive”. Workouts that anyone can do if they scale load and intensity.
And I have a hypothesis.
I think we can work on our happiness much like we can work on our fitness. And I think CrossFit provides an good blueprint for motivating ourselves to do this.
Everyday, people could work on one “exercise”, more like a task, that I think will make us happier. These tasks won't be expensive or be some crazy herculean thing to accomplish. They’ll be simple little things most of us can probably accomplish.
I also believe that happiness is a balance of a handful of categories of things that we want in our life. Things like learning + security + freedom + challenge + reward + health + connection to others etc. I don't have it all laid out, but I'm pretty sure touching on these categories somewhat randomly with these daily suggestions is part of the key, so we don't get bored.
So I’ve collected dozens that I’ll randomly rotate through. And I figure folks might be interested in sharing their own.
For example (category - task):
- learning - watch the history channel (or similar, e.g. PBS) for 30 minutes
- reward - take a walk to an ice cream store and buy yourself something you haven't had in awhile
- connection to others - pick a charity online and donate $5. charitywater.org is a good one.
Do you guys think this effort would actually be worth it? This market will run for 2 months. If I haven't started the blog, I'll refund the market. If I do start it and I get 10 or more positive comments that they love the blog and it's been useful for them in their pursuit of more happiness, I'll cash this market out at $100. $0 otherwise.
Yes, 10 or more positive comments is somewhat subjective. You'll just have to trust me and any commenters on the blog that they dig the effort.
