Twitter’s value is its userbase. Microsoft already has large userbases in Hotmail and Messenger.

It would be trivial to launch a competing service that simply published each users MSN status.

Microsoft buying anybody they are not in legal patent infringement case against is problematic from an anti-trust perspective. I would not look to them to buy twitter, but maybe to launch a competing service.
