## Background information

On May 24, 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) chose seven unsolved math problems as Millennium Prize Problems. The CMI awards a $1 million prize for the solution of each problem. At question creation, six of the problems remain unsolved.

In 2003, Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman proved the Poincare conjecture. The proof was reviewed. Perelman was selected to receive the Fields Medal for the proof. However, he declined the award. He was awarded the Millennium Prize for the proof, but he has not decided if he will accept that award.
