Bob Filner (D), mayor of San Diego, California, was elected to office in November 2012 and began his term in December.
On July 10th, 2013, former City Council member Donna Frye publicly voiced her concerns about allegations of sexual harassment conducted by Filner and asked for his resignation. Before the month was over, seven women claimed to have been harassed by Filner, one being his former communications director, who filed suit on July 22nd.
By the 26th, the scandal had attracted national media attention. Addressing the allegations and calls to resign (coming from as high up as the national chair of his own political party), Mayor Filner made an announcement: "On August 5, I will be entering a behavior counseling clinic to undergo two weeks of intensive therapy."
On the 28th, in an appearance on CNN, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) added her own call for Mayor Filner to step down.
